Ranking on Google can be a time-consuming job, especially for those new to SEO. I remember when I first started my website… I’m just writing content in the hope that someone can find it on Google. At that time, no one did. My content is completely unable to rank to page 1 for keywords. It’s a real struggle… Until I discovered some simple white hat SEO ranking techniques that I’ve been using ever since.

Today, I will share these strategies with you.

White Hat SEO Strategies In 2022

1. Optimize your page title and description

One of the most overlooked on-page SEO factors on an SEO website is the [page title] and [page description].

These meta tags are one of the first things Google sees when crawling a site. This is the ideal place to add your keywords.

Page Title

Every page on your website should have a unique purpose.

For example, a dentist’s homepage should include a header that includes this is a local business and what the business is.

You’d be surprised how many businesses mark their homepage title as the default “Homepage.” This gives zero confidence to search engines that this is actually a site for local dentists.

A better page title might be “Colorado Springs Best Dentist | Acme Dentist Services”. Give your pages a more descriptive title that can take advantage of search results for the following terms:

  • Colorado Springs Dentists
  • Best Dentist Colorado Springs
  • Acme Dental Services (for those searching by brand)
  • Best Dentists in Colorado Springs

A more convincing story title than a dentist.

Title Modifier

Another white hat SEO approach is to include the following modifiers in the title:

  • Numbers: such as 5 items, 6 strokes, 17 ways
  • Years: 2021, 2022
  • Word: Free, Guide, Simple, Step-by-Step

By including this meta title hack, you will definitely increase your CTR, which will be rewarded with Google’s latest Rankbrain algorithm update.

Page Description

While ranking isn’t as important as the page title, the page description is about getting people to click on your listing versus the other 9 results on the page.

Also known as CTR, you want your description (now up to 320 characters) to drive as many clicks as possible to your website.

What differentiates you from your competitors and how do you stand out?

First, you want to be honest about what your website is about. You should not present your listing in a grey hat manner. Doing so creates distrust among users, and they end up going straight back to search results, causing them to have a high bounce rate.

A high bounce rate indicates that Google will deem your site unworthy of consideration for results, and with the introduction of RankBrain, an artificial intelligence search bot, Google will take notice and rank your site down.

Your description should be a quick, well-written overview of the content of the page. The title is the enticing and promotional text that leads to what the person is searching for. It’s a great place to add keywords people will usually find you. Searchers know exactly what they want based on the keywords they type into Google. Your description should be consistent.

Where to find inspiration for SEO titles and SEO descriptions

You can find a great place for Google headline ideas on ads that appear at the top of search results.

These ads have been tested and tested for optimal conversions, so you can incorporate some of these words into your page titles and descriptions.

2. Have a short URL

Permalink structure (aka permalinks) basically refers to how a URL reads a post or page in your browser’s address bar.

It’s the perfect place to add keywords to the mix and believe it or not, that’s what Google’s web crawler can help you rank for.

Several studies have confirmed that shorter URLs tend to be more effective than longer URLs.

When creating a web page URL, keep the following in mind

  • Keep them clean and short
  • Merge keywords
  • Use only hyphens “-” to separate words

Examples of good URL structures:

  • https://website.com/affordable-day-care

Examples of bad URL structures:

Do you understand it……

The idea is to integrate keyword-rich “tell” terms covering what the site contains and is about.

Usually, up to 3-4 words should do the trick. (i.e. the URL for this page is /white-hat-SEO-techniques)

To change permalinks on WordPress, go to Settings > Permalinks.

3. Correct use of HTML headers

The title is basically that. The title or lead of the article or content. I’m referring to the HTML code: H1, H2, etc. lead-out paragraphs in the content. Google thinks these are important. You should too.

H1 tag

From H1 onwards, their rules are simple. These pressures are the same as other headlines, the main “page theme” and Google to take appropriate action.

You should only use one H1 tag per page as this is the main heading and when used more confuses search engines and devalues your rankings.

H2 tag

H2 should be similar to H1. Good place for keywords, but a good practice is to base it on the subtopic of the page.

For example, if your page is about dentists, a good H2 tag could be about one of the services the dentist provides (i.e. cavity cleaning), followed by something about the H2 tag.

Pro-tip for the WordPress WYSIWYG editor: you can select the words you want to use with H2 tags and press ctrl+alt+2 to make them into H2.

H3 tags

Similar to H2 but less important. These should be used as subtopics within H2 tags, but are not always necessary.

By incorporating these tags into your web pages, you can enhance all of your site’s content.

4. Use a CDN to speed up your website

Speeding up a website not only improves its ranking but also improves the user experience.

There are a few things you can do to help improve your website speed

  • Upgrade your hosting
  • Compress images for faster serving
  • Reduce the number of images on a single page
  • Minify JavaScript and CSS – There are several great plugins for WordPress users and other CMS
  • Serving websites faster globally using CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) like Cloudflare

5. Link to other articles (internal links and external links)

By connecting pages on your website using keywords as anchor text, you are essentially creating backlinks inside your website pages. This helps both users and search engines by linking the themes of web pages together.

By using keywords to link pages, you can tell Google what the linked pages are. This also sends link juice to that page, increasing the authority of the page. It’s almost like one page is vouching for another page with recommendations for what it finds there.

There are a few things to keep in mind. You want to push these internal links to the pages you want to rank for. If you don’t want to rank your Contact Us page, don’t force a lot of internal linking there. Instead, push links on pages you want to rank for, such as the home page or important promotion pages.

You should also include outbound links to authoritative sites like Wikipedia.

6. Optimize your images

Image optimization refers to the use of images to improve rankings.

Yes, there’s even a separate search engine strictly for images, but we can work on some items with images that also contribute to Google’s standard search engine.

Again, your images should be nice and compressed to improve page speed, but more importantly, you should always name your image files with your website’s keywords.

Examples of wrong images: 68767sdfsd.jpg or image1.png.

This result will tell the Google search engine that there is no image about you.

Instead, try rich keywords. For example, if you have a dentist’s website, an image file called Chicago-dentist.jpg might serve you better.

Other than that, it’s always a good idea to incorporate keywords into alt tags in an image.

The alt tag is designed to let everyone know what the image is all about. Google is more likely to rank your site if they think you’re trying to create a page accessible to everyone. Keywords are important here, as you can imagine.

7. Use Google Search Console

Regarding Google’s Search Console I can vouch for it. This powerful tool is a must for all website owners, especially those using white hat SEO.

This is where you can tell Google how you want search results to appear on your site, which version of your site to use, and Google will even tell you how people use which keywords to find your site if any. Issues that require immediate attention.

In fact, this is the only place that will tell you if your site has been hacked or if you have any penalties that affect your site. Google will not email you and notify you via email. You must go here.

Search Console also allows you to submit a Sitemap to tell Google where and where your pages are located. Anything that helps Google better understand your site will ultimately lead to better rankings. Here are other SEO tools you can use.

8. Submit a Sitemap to Google

We mentioned this above, but why is a sitemap important?

Sitemaps submitted to the Google Search Console are powerful. It helps Google index your site and tells them exactly where your site is, so you don’t have to wait until Google finds you (maybe months or never).

It also gives them a roadmap for each page and the ability to upgrade or downgrade the importance of a page.

There really is no downside to having a sitemap, if you have a few external links pointing to your site (like a new site) and you have a large site with many pages, they are very useful on sites that create dynamic pages important.

A quick and easy way to submit a sitemap to Google is to install the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin and follow their XML sitemap instructions.

9. Create long-form quality original content

Google loves long-form, high-quality content, and so do users.

If you want to rank #1 on Google, then you should consider creating blog posts that cover the subject in depth.

As you can see below, word count does have an impact on the SERPs, with blog posts over 1900 words ranking among the top results.

Writing long blog posts allows you to increase the time your visitors spend on your site, reduce bounce rates, and naturally include variations on various keywords.

All of these will contribute to a healthy white hat SEO profile.

Add LSI keywords

LSI keywords are essentially synonyms for the keywords you want to rank for.

For example, when you’re writing a post about “home improvement,” you can include words like “home DIY projects” or “fix your home.”

This also helps you rank for long-tail keywords.

10. Add engaging videos

Youtube videos are king in recent years because too many people are using them.

55% of keyword searches now include a Youtube video on the first page.

By adding video and other rich media to your blog posts, you’ll increase the amount of time someone spends on your site, giving you higher rankings.

Also, videos are a great way to explain articles.

11. Get high-quality backlinks

Backlinks are links from other sites to yours.

You can get backlinks in 2 ways:

  • By creating awesome content that people naturally want to link to
  • By creating awesome (or average) content and promoting it to many bloggers and asking for links

Either way, you should make sure that the site linking to you is of high quality (not spam, has great content, etc.).

Another great way to get backlinks is to go on a podcast or do an interview with Future Sharks.

12. Get more shares and comments on social platforms

Google will take your article’s social signals (likes, shares, comments) into account as an engagement factor.

If Google sees that people are sharing and commenting on articles, they will reward those posts that rank higher.

A very easy way to get more comments and shares is to simply tell readers “if you find it valuable, share the post”.

You can also work with influencers and experts in different fields to promote your articles to their fans.
