Google threw me a little curve ball. I scanned terms to observe the phrase “blog writer”.

What is a blog writer? Is a blog writer one who writes blog posts? Or is a blog writer one who blogs? Both definitions vary greatly. One human being who sits down to write a blog post fulfills only one role of a blogger: writing and publishing blog posts. However, one who blogs fulfills all duties consistent with being a blogger.

Bloggers are:

  • observers
  • networkers
  • monetizers
  • content creators

among other duties. Blog writers blog. Bloggers wear may hats. Becoming a skilled blog writer requires ample practice. No one succeeds overnight. Professional bloggers spend years honing their craft. Of course, most bloggers quit before putting in years. But some bloggers see the long term journey through to become a professional.

How can you become a skilled blog writer?

Follow simple steps. Be generous. Be patient. Do the simple, generous thing even when taking these steps feels uncomfortable. Bloggers struggle, fail and quit for being unwilling to embrace uncomfortable emotions.

How to Be a Blog Writer

Do you feel fed up with blogging? Observe the uncomfortable “fed up” emotions in great detail. Be with these uncomfortable feelings seemingly blocking you from taking:

steps to build your blogging skills. Blogging is simple. But blogging feels uncomfortable sometimes. Never make blogging complex. Follow the steps below through comfortable and uncomfortable feelings.

Accept how blogging is a 2 way street. Be open to reader feedback. Pay close attention to reader needs. Solve their problems through your content. Develop a sense of compassion to hone your blogging skills. Intend to read your blog through reader’s eyes. Imagine being someone who follows your blog. Wouldn’t you love for bloggers to listen to your needs? Wouldn’t you enjoy it if bloggers solved your problems?

Listen. Spot problems. Offer solutions via your robust content, both free and premium.

2:  Write Offline Daily to Become Confident

Write offline daily to gain blogging confidence. Open a Word document. Write 500-1000 words daily. Practice writing to become a skilled blog writer.

Writing offline sharpens your skills for writing and publishing blog posts. Practice in private to shine in public. Writing offline gives you confidence enough to take the bold step of publishing content for the general public.

Picture professional athletes. Pro sports players practice diligently for 1000’s of hours during their amateur hour days. See yourself in similar blogging fashion to write daily offline.

Trash the Word document on reaching your daily word count. Become detached from your writing to heighten your skills.

Perhaps you find following this tip to be easy. But if practicing writing feels hard just observe professionals in all walks of life, per my examples above. No one shines on a public stage sans practicing diligently in private.

Tips for Practicing Your Writing Daily

  • set aside time for writing practice
  • reduce distractions by setting up a quiet writing environment
  • hit your daily word count threshold then trash the Word document to practice detachment

Blog writers need to write to become skilled writers. No bloggers gets enough practice writing blog posts alone to become skilled. Hone your skills offline. Gain confidence when nobody seems to be watching. Publish with confidence, clarity and conviction by writing daily with no one around.

3: Practice Emotional Hygiene to Conquer Your Inner Writing Critic

Do you seem sick of that annoying little voice? Imagine a blogging beelzebub sitting on your shoulder any time you sit down to write a blog post. Been there. Heard that. I hear this guy anytime I write resource-style posts spanning 1,500 words or longer.

However, walking this clearer blogging path triggers fears manifest as my inner writing critic picking apart my work. Either I listen, trust and shrink back to who I was or I practice emotional hygiene, observe the voice, feel its feelings and let go the critic for an uplifting, freeing blogging experience.

What is emotional hygiene? You likely cleanse your body daily. Practicing emotional hygiene cleanses your mind daily.

Picture yourself observing your:

to allow each to pass versus clinging to thoughts, feelings and actions. Practicing emotional hygiene daily lets you face, feel and release fears promoting blogging struggle. Letting go fear allows you to blog from love, abundance and trust. Peace of mind, serenity, freedom, generosity and increased worldly blogging success follows.

Beware. The inner writing critic creates head trash. Head trash handcuffs you. My inner writing critic told me not to publish in-depth posts. I observed its fears, felt the fears and proceeded to write in-depth posts. Increased success followed. However, the success only followed me based on releasing fears bolstering my inner writing critic.

Ideas for Practicing Emotional Hygiene

  • meditate
  • do Kriya yoga
  • do yin yoga
  • exercise
  • pray from a high energy of love, abundance and trust
  • sit in quiet to observe your thoughts and feelings (similar to meditating but more free form)

Thriving bloggers know how fear behaves in tricky fashion. Follow a daily mental fitness regimen to spot fear and its trickery. Purge fear.

Starving inner critics of their fuel allows the voices to dissolve into uplifting, supportive mental chatter.

Pay the sometimes uncomfortable price for being a clear, confident blogger mentally, then physically.

4: Study Pro Bloggers Closely

Pro bloggers leave obvious – and subtle – clues signaling why they went pro. Pay close attention to how pro bloggers approach blogging. Follow their lead. This is how to be a blog writer who goes pro; do as pros do.

I read Anil Agarwal’s post on how he generated $500,000 through Bloggers Passion:

BloggersPassion Income Reports: How We Made Over $500,000

Studying his actions closely, I discovered the need to do a few things:

  • delete thin blog posts
  • double down on publishing in-depth content
  • develop greater posture concerning my in-depth content

Do as Pros Do

Even if I did not drive oodles of Google traffic by making these changes I will increase my success because Anil is a highly successful, pro blogger offering advice that helped him succeed. Pros listen to pros.

Aspiring pros listen to pros to follow their successful lead. At the end of the day, listening to your intuition pays off big time over the long haul. But intuitively, you will often follow professional blogger advice at least partially to become a successful blogger.

Professional bloggers teach you:

  • how to blog successfully
  • tips for spotting your blogging mistakes
  • how to blog with confidence, clarity and posture
  • how to avoid common blogging problems

Observe professional bloggers closely. Do not wing blogging. Never give blogging a shot because blogging is no game of chance. Succeed through science. Follow professional blogger advice (at least partially) to learn and practice the science of blogging.

5: Be at Peace with Breaking Blogging – and Writing – Convention

Adopt a conversational writing tone. Never obsess over trying to be the perfect writer. However, focus on being the perfect version of your authentic self. Write from that being. Be at peace with stepping away from the blogging and writing crowd. Feel the fear of criticism arise in your being.

I remember my first few 1 star eBook reviews.

My ego wished to:

in reaction to reading each review. I later discovered how writing critics mirror back their critical view of self via 1 star reviews because you and I see the world as we see ourselves. Writing critics sit in the prison of conventional thinking, feeling and acting. Box yourself in and you will never stand out.

Fears triggered in my mind revealed how I needed to be more confident about stepping away from the blogging herd.

Do Not Break Rules to Be Cool

Never break commonly obeyed rules just to be cool. Listen to your blogging heart. Follow your intuitive lead. Let the small, still voice guide you.

I spent most of my 14 blogging years ignoring SEO. But since I am open to changing strategies in order to support my values I began optimizing long-form posts for SEO. I stepped away from convention for a long time, became more conventional recently but still deviate from the norm through some of my blogging strategies.

The best bloggers break a few rules along the way.

Beware breaking specific fundamental rules unless you feel hyper clear on your break. Good luck trying to succeed running a Blogger blog because you refuse to pay for a domain and hosting. 99% of the time, fear of money loss goads you to forego WordPress dot org for Blogspot. Failure and quitting will follow.

Break rules based on clarity, trust and freedom, not because you fear doing something. Fear-drivers lead to failed results.

Before you break blogging rules you may wonder if blogging is still relevant.

People are consuming videos and podcasts on their phones as much as ever.

6: Format Posts for Easy Scanning

  • headers
  • bullet point lists
  • frequent paragraphs
  • short, crisp sentences
  • bold text
  • italics

to format blog posts for easy scanning.

Imagine yourself reading a book. Do run-on paragraphs annoy you? Blog readers seem annoyed at similar run-on paragraphs published by bloggers. Use headers generously. Give readers a sense of contrast. Allow prying eyes to sweep from plain text to bold headers in order to flow through your blog posts.

Imagine people reading your blog posts on their phone. Holding this image in mind lets you tailor posts to be easy to scan via mobile devices.

Becoming a skilled blog writer involves doing simple things generously, patiently and persistently.

Edge through your inner critical dialog supplied by fear-driven ego. Focus on the basics. As your skills improve your success will expand.
